“ ‘If anyone does not abide in Me, (s)he is cast out as a branch and is withered....’” (John 15 v 6)
This is a serious warning.
So what is fundamental to us?
Why are we called to faith in Jesus?
Why do we falter and die without a Saviour?
Our Father looks for Christ likeness in us.
We are to lead a productive life of service.
All that is worldly has to be pruned from us. (see John 15 v 2) The discipline is beneficent, heaven sent.
“He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness....it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12 v 10, 11)
What is this holiness that is so vital to us?
It is our new, richly blessed life in Jesus. (see John 15 v 4, 5) We are called to mission in this personal, our encounter,
The marvellous, life changing friendship with Jesus.
We learn to look to His faith fulfilling Spirit,
Praying through, to Him who is the love which saves us.
Saves us from sin, satan and final damnation.
The world needs to hear about this.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15 v 13)
The Spirit leading our prayer inspires us.
He invites us to ever draw closer to Jesus.
The Spirit spells out the godly implications for us.
He is intent on setting us journeying towards a holy, heavenly destination.
We have to announce to the world our need of salvation.
Mission is based on the message of friendship with Jesus,
Whereby forgiveness flourishes, justice reigns and love conquers,
As self sufficiency is done away with and the Lord Jesus masters us.
“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lusts of the flesh.” (Galatians 5 v 16) (see Galatians 5 v 19, 20, 21)
By the Spirit, through Jesus, we find the key to holiness,
To living under God’s calling, summonsed by grace.
Grace favours us in a way undeserved, unmerited.
The indwelling Spirit fulfils our new life in Jesus,
His holiness reproduced in us to bless the world.
Love holds joys with responsibilities, experiences and opportunities. Work honestly accomplished in the Spirit, through Jesus,
Will achieve a great amount of goodness around us, Jesus claiming
“ ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’.” (John 14 v 6)
That which the Lord God asks of us,
For herein is the correct, best, blessed way of life,
That very life the Lord God holds out to us,
That use of time, skill, talents, the Spirit calls us to commitment, devotion. The revelation of love we declare, share through Jesus’ friendship, Teaches us to honour our Father’s loving, merciful nature.
The Spirit invites us to share in this virtue,
That our love shown to any, many, becomes our worship.
“Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.” (2 Thessalonians 3 v 5)
“...pray...that the words of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified...” (2 Thessalonians 3 v 1)
“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father,” (based on 2 Thessalonians 2 v 16, 17) both ever at work through the life changing, sanctifying Spirit, all of whom have “Loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort us and establish us.” (Cont) in faith’s calling to mission.
For this we need ever to pray to and through You, Lord Jesus, honouring our Father in so doing, looking to the Spirit to “Establish us in every good word and work.” (Cont)
Our mission is the Spirit’s call for us to become co-workers with the Lord Jesus. What an honour, what a privilege to be called to such a dignified occupation, sharing the Good News of salvation and all the implications.
“...the LORD your God the great and awesome God, is among you,” (Deuteronomy 7 v 21) we learn to realise, respect, delight in, all thanks to our friendship with the Lord Jesus and the impact of the Spirit.
Life takes on an entirely different meaning shaped by the power of holy love. May we ever pray for this love to be active, directive and highly effective by offering the life and death of Jesus to each other.
Our faith has to be based on true love, the love we discover as we pray, prayer being at the heart of our mission. Without prayer we will achieve nothing truly honourable and holy.
Lord, form and equip us for every good work, build us up in virtue as we emulate the Lord Jesus. As “Faith comes from what is preached, and what is preached comes from the Word of Life, the Lord Jesus Christ,” (based on Romans 10 v 17) we asked to be made more holy, better equipped for mission as we focus on the love Jesus offers us.
“ ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you’.” (Jeremiah 7 v 23) Oh, let us listen and learn from what You say to us, dearest Father.
I ask this because of the Lord Jesus’ promise: “ ‘If anyone loves Me, (s)he will keep My word and My Father will love him (her) and We will come to him (her) and make our home with him (her)’.” (John 14 v 23)
We must pass on our rich inheritance of faith in the Saviour of the world, the Master Teach, the One perfect in love to inspire us, help us, guide and support us by the Spirit, so a home for the gospel message and the
Messengers can be found with us, then spread again Spirit led.
May we be bold in our mission to proclaim that the Lord Jesus has died, crucified for our forgiveness, He rose again to offer new life to us, He will return to earth some unknown day, to claim us as His own.
This is the profound Christian message which is our mission to pass on, to believe in wholeheartedly, to be changed by. Empowered by the love of the Lord Jesus and the active, zealous Spirit, may we strive to evangelise.
Let this life changing love of the Lord Jesus sustain us in faith and all who hear the message. May we find hearts and minds hungry to be fed on the truth of who the Lord Jesus is and all He accomplishes for us. I ask that as we serve in love, our faith grows in love of the Lord Jesus, our Master and Saviour, so as to delight and honour You, dearest Father.
“At each beat of my heart I want, O Beloved, to renew my offering to You an infinite number of times, until the shadows have disappeared and I can tell You of my love face to face in eternity.” (St Thérèse of Lisieux 1873-1897) Then, please let this deeper love be evident to all others.
Oh the security we find in Jesus’ love and forgiveness, Your most merciful gift to us dearest Father. This has to be imparted to the world, the best teaching always arising out of personal experience. May we narrate the difference the gentle, divine healing of Jesus has made to us.
In receiving to give of the life and love of the Lord Jesus, may we, by the Spirit, be emptied out of self, all pre-occupations, misapprehensions, delusions, making better room for the love of Jesus to fill us and fulfil our mission.
I ask that we “Sanctify You Lord God, in our hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks us a reason for the hope that is in us, with meekness and fear,” (1 Peter 3 v 15) reverent awe.
May our prayers, words, decisions, actions invite others to see the hope we live by and enquire as to what this is founded upon. When challenged, downcast, threatened, may we return good for evil, love for animosity, patience for intolerance, blessings for insult.
All that is good within us, coming from the love, forgiveness and mercy shown us, Your offer to us through the Saviour Jesus, by means of the Spirit, Lord God, let our new life be lovingly conceived and hospitable. It must be the welfare of others which ever gives rise to our mission, our mission to be accomplished in the glorious, life enhancing name of Jesus. Amen.
