TRUST 2

Sue O’Donnell. 17.07.20

“I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.” (Psalm 52 v 8)

For trust is built on predictability to an extent.

‘What’ you ask ‘Is the most likely?’

Your answer rests upon dependability;

Upon assessment of the most likely.

Now on the subject of the mercy of God,

We have to look at His personality,

Also on any known history.

What do we actually know about God?

He is a Trinity of Three equally loving Persons.

Our personal faith history will tell us this:

“Blessed is the (wo)man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. (S)he will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

(Jeremiah 17 v 7, 8 NIV) Or else without experience of God we have not got our toes on the starting line of belief.

We have to study the sacred Scriptures

To find out how the Lord God describes Himself.

Then we see He is kindly, a God of justice,

Slow to anger, quick to help us, ever loving.

Love will always act mercifully,

Therefore it is reasonable to trust in Him,

Or in Them, if you think of the Trinity as Three.

What is the overwhelming evidence of God’s mercy?

It has to be without shadow of doubt, the †.

“When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?” (Psalm 56 v 3, 4)

The † of the beloved Son, the Lord Jesus.

The One who lived and died for us at Calvary,

He came to fulfil the Law and the Prophets.

The Lord Jesus chose to die for us

Because He acted entirely out of love for us,

Also love and respectful obedience to our Father.

Jesus acted “...that it might be fulfilled

Which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet saying:

‘He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses’.” (Matthew 8 v 17)

“Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from

Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” (Psalm 51 v 10, 11)

There is no greater, nor more serious infirmity

Than that sickness of sin which firstly impairs,

Then goes on to ruin our relationship with God.

Out of love’s mercy, our Father sent the Son,

According to the situation changing Holy Spirit,

To die on our behalf that justice was seen to be done.

Jesus paid the penalty for all our infirmity.

Now, if this is not mercy, I do not know what is.

The world has been gifted a Saviour, I know.

“I will praise You forever because You have done it.” (Psalm 52 v 9)

“And in the presence of Your saints, I will wait on Your name, for it is good.” (Psalm 52 v 9)

Dearest Father, all of us who believe in the Lord Jesus as the Saviour You gifted us, are in the process of becoming saints, the Lord Jesus’ good works in progress according to our formation by the Spirit.

I can wait on Your name means I can, I will daily pray to You, asking to receive, repenting as necessary, adoring, admiring, thanking and praising because of the blessings of calling on You as a Trinity.

We pray and we see Your blessings unfold. “Deliver us from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,” (Psalm 51 v 14) for it was the sins of all of us which necessitated the saving †. You are “The God of my salvation,”

(Cont.) of all believer’s saving help, our rescue.

“And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness,” (Cont) that right standing, a status the Lord Jesus has won for us. You are merciful in love, ever beautiful, trustworthy and dependable.

“O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise”, (v 16) for we trust in Your unfailing mercy, Your steadfast kindness, Your faithfulness towards us, the cause of real joy and gladness.

“The fool has said in his (her) heart, ‘There is no God’,” (Psalm 53 v 1) and they are indeed most foolish.

“Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge who ...do not call on You, LORD? (based on Psalm 14 v 4)

Who on earth do they think is the Creator of the world, the Sustainer, the Protector, the One who holds everything in perfect balance? They have no answer, none at all, to such relevant questions.

So busy about this, that and the other so they do not have time to look at the important question as to why we are here at all, what do we live for, and what happens when we die, they ignore You, mistrustingly.

But, Lord God, I am sure You as a Trinity are “With the generation of the righteous” (v 5) every generation throughout history. “Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!” ( v 7) was said in

times of old.

It did! Out of mercy You made this happen by sending the Second person of the Trinity to be One like us in all things but sin. Then having modelled the perfect life of loving obedience to You, the Lord Jesus went to the † to save us from being separated from You.

“Blessed is the (wo)man who makes You LORD, his (her) trust, and does not respect the proud” those who think they can live without You, being independent, “Nor such as turn to lies.” (Psalm 40 v 4)

We trust because of the facts we see, hear and can research as prime evidence that You are sovereign in power, almighty in majesty, all loving, all mercifully forgiving of us through the Lord Jesus.

“Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works”, (v 5) the evidence is overwhelming to those who care to look, to pray, to ask to receive wisdom and understanding from You.

These wonderful works “...which You have done” (Cont) make You trustworthy. We have no reason at all to doubt You, for Your being evidently at work is conclusive.

“Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered,” (Cont.) countless in number and majestic in results.

The Lord Jesus says “ ‘Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me’.” (John 14 v 1) “ ‘As long as I am in the world” which will be forever for He is our forever Saviour, “ I am the light of

the world’.” (John 9 v 5)

Here we are presented by holy wisdom and truth to accept or disbelieve as we choose. Belief is dependent upon trusting in what we are told, or asked to do in Your name Father, the name of the Lord Jesus, Your

promised Word of life fulfilled for us at the †of Calvary.

We have become family, brothers and sisters, all thanks to the Lord Jesus living, dying and rising again to be with us as our forever Saviour. We trust in this truth. It is incontrovertible.

“In Scripture it says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone and the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame’.” Thank You for making the basis of our trust clear to us.

Lord God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, You are our refuge in times of trouble, our closest Friend at all times, and ever our true source, real source of all joy and gladness now and forever.

“And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9 v 10) It is this trust which allows us to feel at peace with You and really joyous

in Your presence.

Lord God, our hope, our belief, our trust, we praise and thank You for everything, but especially for making Yourself known to us so readily in the Person of our Saviour Brother, who is Your way to live.

We turn to Jesus and can say “ ‘Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; and will be glad and rejoice in His salvation’.” (Isaiah 25 v 9) Trustingly we will. Amen.
