YELLOW

Sue O’Donnell 29.08.20

Yellow is a colour for summer,

A forerunner to golden woodland in autumn’s timely turning.

Striking bold sunflowers, tall towers of gently nodding huge yellow heads.

Bold flower bed of standing sentries, not daring to move off duty.

The blaze of a sun drenched beach in summer’s heatwave.

Far reach of sun upon the stretching golden sands of yellow to amaze and delight.

Dandelions plus buttercups, golden, shiny, glowing with reflection, connection.

‘Do you like butter or not?’ the conversation begins,

Buttercup placed to boast, show mellow, yellow glow of the chin.

Ripening corn, tall, proud on a sun shot summer morn, seen as the covering,

Hiding stunning poppies in profusion peeping out amidst yellow stalks in fields where you walk.

Sunshine and shadow at play, heat settling, sun kissed,

As if a hazy moist mist covers the way today.

The golden, black eyed, daisy like petals of rudbeckia.

Fully sun loving, fertile soil enjoying kniphofia growing, some yellow, some orange.

Flat headed florets of mustard yellow sedum,

Contrasting with tall, elegant spires of towering verbascum.

Delectable day lilies, which amazingly are edible.

Arum lilies tower tall, dramatically, attractively imposing.

Golden garden grasses, ripened fruit of the Malus,

Late flowering clematis, unusually eye-catching shaped like a bell.

Sun worshipping, space loving, daring drifts of echinacea.

Should anything else in the garden be added to the glory of summer?

Do not forget the yellow rose that grows appropriately for a fifty year golden anniversary.

And there is an unusual buddleia, clusters of tiny, nectar rich flowers, some yellow.

Summer days buzz with nectar collecting, humming, stripy bees

Until golden sundown blazes across the dusky sky.

Putting us all to quiet rest, sweet dreams and slumber,

Until tomorrow’s number shines forth in yellow glory once more.

For the Lord God, our Creator Father, ever holds more in store,

Have you as yet seen the beauty of yellow dahlia?

Lord God, Creator of all life; thank You for all You paint yellow in summer. What a heartwarming, most glorious colour, so cheerful and uplifting. Amen.
