I have recently seen the first glimpse this year
Of Agapanthus, the African lily,
A flower truly lovely in bright blue, purple or white.
Some are even bi-coloured, others a distinctive purply navy.
What a treat to meet the eyes!
Enhancing the sight of a late summer border.
Fast growing, eye catching, demanding notice,
The Agapanthus is an alluring perennial,
Slender arching foliage opens out domed flowers
To give mid and late summer hours’ pleasure.
A treasure, fast growing, with a neat compact habit,
Agapanthus add glamour to a sunny border,
As plenty of starry blooms readily flourish.
Tall, striking and accommodating, what a glorious flower this is.
Flourishing from July through to September,
The genus comprises of both evergreen and deciduous strains.
Whether in a cottage garden or more formal setting,
The Agapanthus looks well and pleases us.
And rather surprisingly, originating in southern Africa,
This plant is sufficiently hardy to be cultivated here, locally
As long as it sits in moist, well drained, fertile soil,
Any situation in a border or a patio pot will do.
What a lot the Agapanthus has got to offer us,
Blooming freely, vigorously throughout summer.
How happy I was to catch a glimpse recently.
With its marvellous splash of summery sapphire blue.
Like the sunny sky above me on that particular day.
Whilst on the ground was happily found
The glory of the Agapanthus, the ever robust African lily.
Lord, for the ever glorious blue, white and purple Agapanthus. I praise and thank You. This flower is so strikingly tall and elegant, truly lovely! Amen.
