“How holy and beloved, how pleasing and holy, how peaceful, delightful, lovable and desirable above all things, it is to have a Brother like this.” (St Francis of Assisi “Letter to All the Faithful” Omnibus p.96)
What is the fullest experience of receiving Jesus in the Eucharist?
The holy joy of adoration.
The jubilation in true celebration.
The fact that Jesus comes to us as a divine revelation.
The movement of the Holy Spirit accomplishing this, our realisation.
The opportunity to express together in liturgy our devotion.
The exalted height of fulfilled joyous emotion.
The promise of Christ Jesus meeting its completion,
This liturgical sung or said in veneration.
Our satisfied, sanctified hope and anticipation.
“He saved us by washing away our past and giving us a new birth, by making us new through the Holy Spirit, that He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour.” (Titus 3 v 5 The Truth)
In the Holy Eucharist we experience with true joy
The certainty of mercy, our sins having found remuneration.
An awed sense of rapt admiration.
A silence falling over our marred creation, as congregation.
The profound peace in becoming a new creation.
The power of holy love given without hesitation.
An understanding of humanity being blessed, a declaration.
Truly we rejoice in our regeneration.
The world is claimed by our Saviour, each and every nation,
Hoping to achieve holiness, undertaking this in a glorious preparation.
Christ, real and present, He is our richest jubilation.
“In His name the nations will place their hope.” (Matthew 12 v 21 The Truth)
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for He who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10 v 23 NIV)
What is this hope? We are being cleansed of all the guilt of our sin by “Our God and Saviour’s loving kindness.” (Titus 3 v 14 The Truth) We are being made righteous and the gift of the Holy Eucharist draws us very closely indeed to the Lord Jesus, all thanks for the joy that ever will be.
We pray, we ask to receive. We are blessed by the Holy Spirit’s impact and we come to believe we have a Saviour. “So we are made completely acceptable to God by His grace and have become heirs with the expectation of eternal life,” (Titus 3 v 7 The Truth) all thanks for our hope.
Advent is a time of anticipation, “Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ,” (Titus 2 v 13) And we will not be disappointed! All thanks for joyous watching and waiting.
Our Saviour Brother comes to us now hidden under the form of bread and wine. “O Sacrament Most Holy, O Saviour Divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine.” (Catholic Prayer) We joyously offer all thanks for this most precious of gifts.
Christ Jesus, the Prince of Peace, He comes to re-establish our right standing before You Father God, so You do not look upon our sin, but upon the merits of Jesus’ holiness offered up for us. All thanks for Your mercy.
All the merits our Saviour Brother won for us at the † are being re-called, remembered, re-presented to us each and every time we receive the gift of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus. All thanks for our friendship re- established.
Father God, Your Son is everything to us, our life, our hope, our meaning in living, our daily purpose in serving, our assurance of Your mercy and love towards us. All thanks for the presence of Jesus.
Our Saviour, the Redeemer, our hope, by the blessed working of the Holy Spirit, enables us to recognise the saving grace of Your gift, dearest Father, encouraging us to give up our former ways to live an upright, godly life. All thanks for the Lord Jesus’ example.
We await now – with an especial awareness during Advent – the fulfilment of the incredible blessing for which we long, the return of our Lord, Saviour and Redeemer. All thanks that this is promised.
Father, Your glory will be revealed in all its fullness as the Almighty Trinity, when our Saviour Jesus Christ returns to claim us for Your family. All thanks for adopting us as Your beloved children.
Jesus, out of love for us and for You, to honour and fulfil Your will for our redemption, He sacrificed His life on the †, on our behalf. This is now recalled most prayerfully in the Holy Eucharist. All thanks for the Sacramental Mystery which is nevertheless a reality.
To know that our Brother paid with His life to rescue us from sin, from satan, from offending and distressing You, holy Father, making us into a people You could possess for Yourself, truly this is awesome. All thanks for accepting us in Jesus.
We would not know of this if it were not for the Holy Spirit’s descent as promised us by Jesus. May we ever pay the Third Person of the Trinity our highest respect, as we do to You, Eternal Father and to our Saviour Brother.
Always we have so much to learn in our faith. In thinking of the Holy Spirit, I am reminded that Jesus tells us “Those who curse the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.” (Matthew 12 v 32 The Truth) All thanks for the warning.
The Lord Jesus is the supreme Teacher, an anointed Preacher, full of grace and truth, so we can better understand Your personality dearest Father, as soon in our Brother. All thanks for this revelation.
“And of His fullness we have all received and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ,” (John 1 v 16, 17) especially as He claims us by the Holy Eucharist. All thanks for gracing our life in this way.
Eternal Father, no one has seen You, although mankind has heard You declaring Your delight in Your beloved Son, as He makes You known to us in many ways. All thanks for His approach.
We know of Your love, we experience Your love as steadfast, merciful and kindly, because Jesus’ nature is Your nature. You gave up Your Son for us, who gives up His life for us. All thanks for the measure of Your love, such a mercy for us.
Jesus lives in You, together with the Holy Spirit, so when we receive Him in the sacred liturgy of the holy Mass, we receive the Godhead in its entirety. All thanks for drawing us into the love which You have for each other.
It is difficult for us to understand that the Divine Healer is shaped by Three Persons who are One, yet this teaches us what the fullness of the power of holy love accomplishes. And it is to this we are invited to partake of. All thanks for the Holy Eucharist.
Jesus way of life is shown to be the way to attain the glorious state that awaits us in heaven. This is why we are told to listen to our Master and accept all He says to us. All thanks that Jesus reveals divine truth, for that is His nature.
We are called into His service to put our faith into action by leading a life worthy of a true disciple, one who is conformed to the spirit of the gospel teaching. All thanks for the honour of this responsibility.
May we during Advent, make extra efforts to delight and honour You, having been made Your loving sons and daughters through our belonging to the Saviour. All thanks for this honour.
May we in imitation of Jesus’ love and devotion towards You, Father God, give ourselves entirely as we partake of Jesus in holy communion. All thanks that this is a taste of heaven, an inspiration.
I ask that throughout Advent, the following Christmas season and beyond, we remain united with our Lord and Master as we pray, always looking to heed the Holy Spirit. All thanks for the Holy Spirit’s direction, guidance and inspiration.
Father, You took delight in Your Son because of all His actions being upright, honest, noble, trustworthy and righteous. May our sharing of the Lord Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, this gift of unsurpassed grace, ever enable us to grow in the likeness of His holiness. All thanks for this opportunity.
The Holy Spirit is ever at work with us to equip and enable us to live virtuously. We are profoundly, highly, richly blessed by the love and life of Jesus gifted us in the Holy Eucharist.
“ ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1 v 29) He, the Saviour of the entire world, the Redeemer, has come to us out of love, according to Your mercy, holy Father. All thanks for our new life.
“I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You. I will sing praise to Your name.” (Psalm 9 v 1) All thanks for all that You do.
“O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8 v 9) as made known to us by the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit of faith, of prayer, of love, of mercy. All thanks for the Almighty Trinity.
“And those who know Your name will put their trust in You. For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You,” (Psalm 9 v 10) for we find You in Christ Jesus. All thanks for the joyous praise that ever will be.
“Let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; let them ever shout for joy because You defend them. Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You. For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous...” (Psalm 5 v 11) All thanks that we are made righteous when we live through Jesus and the Holy Eucharist advances this delight. Amen.
