Surely the curve has an appeal which is real
To those where anything is eye-catching,
Intricately decorative, pretty or fancy!
To me straightness is tedious!
Make a garden path curvaceous,
Each and every time, given opportunity.
Are not curves always more sensuous?
Straight is neat, tidy and always in order, yes;
As in the patterns of gingham and tartan,
Or simple lines, dots and carefully placed spots.
But then, look again at the floral designs,
Are they not in their intricacy so fine, being fancy,
Very much more interesting, being alluring?
This maybe because the floral reflects nature,
The glory the Lord God surrounds us by.
High on the agenda of interest
Must be anything, everything revealing God at work amongst us.
Plain patterned fabrics can attract us.
This will be by colour, blends and contrasts,
Rather than detail contained in woven patterns.
Attractive can be the opulence in richness of colour;
But very often vintage florals remain the favourite,
Having stood well the test of time,
Occasionally over many a century.
So what is it about floral fabric?
Why does this always pull at the gaze insistently?
Again the colour will play its part, appeal to the heart.
But think of the popularity of the legendary William Morris,
Famous for his fine designs of floral fabrics,
Or the modern day Cath Kidson, similarly designing,
Combining pattern and colour very cleverly.
Where did they both find their inspiration?
In a glorious garden with its floral abundance, of course!
Our Creator being so generous in love,
In all that He shares with us
Out of the goodness of His heart,
To start and ever continue our journey in faith,
The Lord God, life’s Giver surrounds us
In the intricacy of detail which makes up daily life.
Gifting too, the skills of craftspeople,
God is able to spread His favour far and wide.
The glory of God does ever abide,
And we feel delighted, excited even,
By the variety in life depicted creatively, artistically.
Fabrics offer a real charm of their own,
Sufficient to decorate even dominate our home,
Where we give voice visually to personal choice.
For me, the more I see of anything floral,
Happy I will be, content to enjoy nature indoors.
A delicate feature replicating God’s own world.
Especially beautiful when portraying a flower garden,
When the borders curve around a lush, velvet lawn
To adorn in bright colour the message of summer.
June, July and August, for many, a time which is best.
Certainly it is blessed by a floral abundance and fragrance.
How marvellous to find in many an instance where
Creation is well replicated by the brilliance of fabric makers. Designers portraying in detail the richness of summer,
Making a grand entrance into our home,
Delightful in the presence of pattern
Where an abundance, some would say indulgence,
Of a floral feast does meet and greet us.
The ambience of outside brought in, let the joy begin!
Fabric offers another different perspective on nature,
Just look at the detail of meticulous woven patterns,
Oh what a feature ever graced by nature.
Creator Father, I thank You for all skilled craftspeople, men and women who devote time and talent to depicting the natural world in very many forms. The patterns on fabrics affect us all daily. It is so enjoyable to be able to choose a fabric for soft furnishing in the home. We are almost spoilt for choice! How glorious it can be to see so many styles, different designs and patterns reflecting the glory of the natural world. It is as if You want to share what You have made with us continuously. I think You do! Amen.
