“We love Him because He first loved us.” (1 John 4 v 19)
The infinite love shown us
Is made known by Christ Jesus,
His zealous Spirit, ever, ever industrious.
It is essential for life and wellbeing,
That we are in the position of seeing
And understanding our Father’s enormous love.
He gifts His Son for this purpose,
That we gain knowledge of perfect love.
The love of God is manifest in Christ Jesus,
The perfect Man, living like us, but sinless.
“And of His fullness we have all received and grace for grace.” (John 1 v 16)
The Son shows us the Father,
He teaches by means of the Spirit.
The Spirit develops understanding of our Father Creator,
His love spilling out in the whole of creation.
In the beauty we see, the sheer magnificence,
We realise His hand is omnipotent,
What power to create our universe, such a great work, It had to be imagined and implemented in detail.
Then in the vastness of the planetary system,
Is built a place for us to inhabit
Until we reach our homeland in heaven.
“The earth with its store of wonders untold.” (From a hymn, the source not known)
We are given a life preparatory to this,
On a star where all that is necessary
For our body and soul to survive, is provided.
Perfect love is ever at work providing and replenishing. Our spiritual needs are met too.
Through the One who offers Himself sacrificially
To expiate the fault of ours when ungodly.
Infinite love and a longing for our company,
Accepts this offering of Christ Jesus on our behalf.
How do we know this? Love keeps a happy record.
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3 v 16)
Love is forgetful of sins, errors and wrongdoings,
But remembering well all that is good,
Anything noble, trustworthy and beneficial to mankind. Thus the sacred Scriptures were written,
The Holy Spirit inspiring the hearts and minds of authors,
In all truth, in wisdom, in biblical narrative.
Love shines from the pages of the four gospels,
Love speaks as it seeks us out in the letters
Written by the first followers of the Lord Jesus.
Their personal accounts are not lost in the mists of time.
“Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples.” (1 Chronicles 16 v 8)
Instead they combine in the most powerful love story,
A true story at that, which has ever been written.
Love reaches out across time in redemption’s history
And the sheer mystery of the holy Eucharist.
We are told how, where, when and why
Christ Jesus offers up His body and His blood for us.
We have eyewitness accounts of His Last Supper,
His Passion at Gethsemane and death at Calvary.
We see our Lord laid out in the tomb,
The heart breaking sorrowful gloom of death yet to be vanquished.
“If Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!” (1 Corinthians 15 v 17)
Only then for us to be utterly amazed, transfixed
By the glory of Christ Jesus’ resurrection.
We are being taught that love is more powerful than death.
What hope love is gifting us at the †of Jesus.
Love allowed the beloved Son to be born amongst is.
To die for us, but true love being incarnate,
He rose again from the dead to be with us,
Forever our Saviour, forever our Brother, forever our Lover.
The power of holy love delivers us from annihilation. This love shows itself in the work of the Holy Spirit.
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8 v 2)
The divine fire come to enlighten the world is the Holy Spirit,
Especially by the wisdom and truth
As made known to us by the love of Jesus.
The Spirit of love inflames our hearts and minds
So we find the mystical body of Christ Jesus, the church, Formed by us, maintained and ever at work.
The Spirit of love dictates Christian ministry,
Gifting us the ability to serve accordingly.
He develops our natural, inborn talents.
He gifts extraordinary skills to all mankind.
“There are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit.
There are differences of ministries, but the same
Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” (1 Corinthians 12 v 4-7)
The Spirit of Faith inhabits the divine sacrament,
Most particularly in the Holy Eucharist,
Able to change the bread we provide and the wine we offer,
Into the body and blood of the One who did suffer
In order to obtain forgiveness for us.
The Holy Spirit is re-presenting the events of the † to us,
In each and every daily, worldwide Eucharist.
Yes, this love too, like the Father and the Son,
This love is infinite, most glorious, marvellous.
Love is the explanation of how one Man changed history entirely.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3 v 16)
Love is the message and means of the Church.
Love permeates our doctrine; our liturgy.
Love is behind the mystery of transubstantiation.
That very same love that initiated creation.
Infinite love is not only in the action, an attraction. Infinite love is a Person in Three, the holy Trinity.
For in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
We find love ever at work, a love most perfect,
That love which seeks to connect heaven to earth, Through the infinite love given birth in Christ Jesus.
“That was the true Light which gives light to every (wo)man coming into the world.” (John 1 v 9)
“As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (John 1 v 12)
Thank You dearest Father, for sending the Spirit of love who enables us to love, honour and praise You through Your Son, showing us that “To live in Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1 v 21)
We need to broadcast this wonderful gospel message, that of love’s saving help offered through our salvation as won for us by Christ Jesus dying on the †.
“Let each of you look out not only for his (her) own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2 v 4) The power of holy love is contagious, thank goodness!
May this holy love govern us. “Grant, O Lord, that we may always revere and love Your holy name, for You never deprive of Your guidance those You set on the foundation of Your love.” (Collect offered during Mass 21.06.20)
We fail to love because of not doing all that You ask of us, Father, all the Lord Jesus shows us to be the right way of living, turning instead to our own ways of working. But You have rectified this through the sacrifice of Jesus.
Such love poured out over us mercifully, may love always respond to love as best we can. Thank You for sending the Spirit of love to love us back to holiness.
Love has to be our faith’s seed time and harvest. I ask that the Holy Spirit always helps us with matters requiring doing what we know is right but does not really suit us.
“This is the spiritual principle by which to live: treat others in precisely the same way as you would like them to treat you... You are to love your enemies and seek to do good to them.” (Luke 6 v 31, 35 The Truth) This is a tall order for us.
But the closer we grow in love to the Lord Jesus, the more loving we will become, like Him. Come, Holy Spirit of love and make us loving, by longing to share in all the ways of the Lord Jesus.
May the love we claim we have for one another be acted out visibly, audibly, tangibly. As we are never left to struggle on our own, may we hurry to help each other in whatever way the need is perceived and we are equipped to do.
Thank You for the incredible power of holy love. This love supports, strengthens and builds us up in determination and resolve. This holy love oils the wheels of our conscience. Love is the fullness of life the Lord Jesus offers us and we are so very, very grateful. Amen.
