“You must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Matthew 5 v 48
Father, You call us to be perfect in the Lord Jesus.
You call us, and He calls us and the Spirit directs us
To live daily, completely in the Lord Jesus’ uprightness.
And surely it is with a profound significance
That Your wise guidance and teaching is summed up in a particular way Which comes alive in meaningfully way as we pray.
“ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...Love your neighbour as yourself’.”
Matthew 22 v 37, 38
Love is not only the description, it is what actually matters.
Love is the key predominant, essential issue.
When seemingly defeated and discouraged love picks us up,
Dusts us down and helps to start us off again on faith’s journey.
We must walk and talk in a particular direction, that of love,
And ever the connection will be prayer.
“Look upon me and be merciful to me, as Your custom is toward those who love Your name. Direct my steps by Your word, and let not iniquity have dominion over me. Redeem me from the oppression of man, that I may keep Your precepts.”
Psalm 199 v 132, 133, 134
When things go wrong as they all too frequently do,
Let love, only love be our reaction.
Holy Spirit, teach us to pray the troubles away!
Show us our part from an alert conscience and sensitive heart.
Open our mind to the wrong we have done and help us show mercy.
Mercy is love in action as tolerance and forgiveness plainly evident as kindness.
“Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever.” Psalm 136 v 26
It is the Spirit of the holiness of the Lord Jesus which transforms us.
The shadow cast by the †is the shadow of influence,
The bright light of love ahead and above us.
When we look to our Lord and Saviour as the perfect example,
His life is inspiring, lifting our sights to greater heights.
It is the Lord Jesus who draws out of us the response of love, prayerfully Spirit led.
“God shows His love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”
Romans 5 v 8
Come Holy Spirit, teach us to pray in a particular way.
“ ‘Lord, You know what I desire,
But I desire it only if it be Your will that I should have it.
If it is not Your will, good Lord, do not be displeased,
For my will is to do Your will’,”(St Julian of Norwich) and overcome all difficulty.
Enable us to pray in all sincerity and with the confidence of expectancy.
“ ‘Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’.”
Matthew 6 v 9
We have to pray ardently daily in any way we can,
Bringing before the throne of grace and mercy,
Not just anything, but everything which is uppermost on our heart and mind.
For to approach problems with love in trust and dependency
Upon Your sovereign authority, holy Father,
Is to learn how to become more like the Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit at work.
“I have been crucified with Christ, and I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2 v 20
Lord Jesus, let You holiness deliver us from the power of all evil.
Let Your love shine amongst us in the bright light of uprightness.
Calm us, Lord, quiet us by Your love that we live with forgiveness.
For as we come to know You as Lord and Saviour, we are blessed.
In our blessing may we become a blessing, praying daily,
Asking for help and guidance as often as is necessary.
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the (wo)man who trusts in Him.”
Psalm 34 v 8
“ ‘Look among the nations and watch – be utterly astounded! For I will work a work in your days which you would not believe, though it were told you.’”
Habakkuk 1 v 5
Father, You can do so much more than we could possibly ever hope for, dream of, ask about or imagine happening. All this through the Spirit of holiness alive and well in the Lord Jesus. Have we praise and thank You for the effectiveness of Your love. Who would have thought some could actually reach that place in faith where they have moved so far in a particular direction towards the Lord Jesus as to claim: “It makes me happy to suffer for You, as I am suffering now, and in my own body to do what I can to make up all that has still to be undergone by Christ for the sake of His body the Church.” (Colossians 1 v 24) Thank You that there are saints amongst us.
But mostly, Father, Lord God, we stray from You, we sin and we suffer the consequences. May Your Spirit come upon us to point us in a particular direction. Life can be made holy only by coming to You through prayer in the Lord Jesus, led by the Spirit. This is where the fullness of life promised is found. “ ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No-one comes to the Father except through Me’,” (John 14 v 6) is not only a promise, it is awe inspiring and so is faith upbuilding. May we heed this.
Many of us tend to shy away from friction and faction without praying about all the implications. Lord, teach us to pray through whatever challenges, conflicts, disagreements, disruptions, trials and temptations face us. “ ‘LORD, bless us and keep us,...’” (based on Numbers 6 v 24) Keep us safe from trying to run our lives independently. “ ‘Make Your facer shine upon us and be gracious to us’.”(Cont) Show us the error of our ways and point us in the particular direction, towards prayer.
Thank You that prayer is ever the connection between all that is only worldly and the access to holiness as a transformation. “ ‘Lord lift up Your countenance upon us, and give us peace’.” (based on Numbers 6 v 26) The presence of the Lord Jesus is the peace in and amongst us. For does He not say to us regarding all He reveals to us, “ ‘These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation,’” (John 16 v 33) all manner of pressure. We feel
distress when we fail to pray for we get ourselves in a muddle and a mess, lacking seeking holy guidance.
“ ‘But be encouraged’,” are the helpful words we need to hear, “ ‘I have overcome the world’.” (John 16 v 33) What a triumph the victory of the † is! The Lord Jesus is alive to help us, His Spirit to teach us. “The mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8 v 6) Through prayer we are helped to know what to do, how to react, what to say, for prayer enables us to grow in the holiness of the Lord Jesus. We give all sincere thanks and praise for the forgiveness meted out according to the † which allows us to enter that sacred space.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear,” for prayer draws us near to Your plan and purpose of holiness, Father. Perhaps one of the most significant things You ever tell us is to “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46 v 10) Please help us to do this that we can focus and concentrate on all You say to us through the ideas, intentions, impressions or implications Your Spirit will give us.
“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness,” (Psalm 4 v 1) because of all the Lord Jesus has done to draw me closer to You. He alone, praying through Him, to Him, with Him, aligning my life to His, the Lord Jesus makes by His Spirit, effective our prayer life. “For we have become
partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,” (Hebrews 3 v 14) seeking to share every blessed aspect of His holiness. Come Holy Spirit, teach us to pray more ardently that You can more easily point us in the right direction.
“And now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. Deliver me from all my transgressions.” (Psalm 39 v 7) Teach me please to reflect upon what happens to me, or with me or around me, especially
when things go wrong. Enable me to ask the all important question ‘What are You trying to teach me amidst this challenge? How are You wanting to bring me closer to You?
In what way are You asking me to line up nearer to all You ask of me? Are You seeking to increase my trust, overcome some inherent fault, correct a fresh tendency to fail, reveal a character flaw, or what else?’
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3 v 23) but I thank You that this is not the end of the story. “If any of you lacks wisdom, (s)he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given.” (James 1 v 5) This world spells out mixed messages. Come Holy Spirit, show us what the Lord Jesus would have done and enable us to do similar. Point us in the right direction, in this direction. Make our prayer powerful and effective that we are guarded and guided through the convoluted maze of life. “As we know Jesus better, His divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life.” (2 Peter 1 v 3)
How wonderful is this! Keep us please, ever attentive and receptive through prayer, willingly handing over the reigns of control that we heed all You, Lord God, say to us. The way of holiness is the reverence of obedience as love breaks through. Point us please, in the right direction, that agreeing by believing in and doing all You ask for us, the pursuit of holiness is prayerfully accomplished. I ask this in Your name Lord Jesus, as there is no other way to go.
“ ‘For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them’.” ( Luke 9 v 56) All that I am Lord, I place in Your hands. Do not let me snatch it back again, for I want Your love to break through fully. Amen.
