“He rained down manna on them to eat, and (has) given them of the bread of heaven. Man ate angel’s food; He sent them food to the full.” (Psalm 78 v 24)
This historical event which happened to the Israelites crossing the desert,
Such kindness is now ascribed to us who believe in Jesus.
Jesus becomes for us, the Bread of heaven, our Saviour,
In spite of being a Man, our Brother.
Blessed and possessed fully by the Spirit,
Whose work is to instruct and advise us,
The Lord Jesus is made known to us as Saviour.
Although a Brother, He was obedient unto death,
Death on a †, to save us from sin and sanctify us.
The Holy Spirit forms Christ Jesus in us.
The Spirit of the Holy Eucharist brings Jesus alive to us.
His actual presence, although well hidden and mysterious.
“The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever!” (Psalm 22 v 26)
Beneath the substance of bread and wine,
Jesus is brought to us as the Bread of heaven,
The leaven of our faith, come to live within us.
Great grace is given for this to happen.
We are called to become holy, to live a life of love.
In Jesus the Saviour, we rediscover God in our midst.
Supported by the Holy Spirit we are guided towards the holiness of Jesus.
Strengthened in our belief in Jesus’ conquest at the †,
Exaltingly we feed off His precious Body and Blood.
The glory of the † of forgiveness gifts us sanctity.
Forgiveness is always the starting point for mercy.
How merciful to be offered the Body and Blood of Christ Jesus.
“The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?” (1 Corinthians 10 v 16)
“For we, though many, are one bread and one body, for we all partake of that one bread.” (1 Corinthians 10 v 17)
Lord Jesus, the Passover meal which You shared with Your disciples was the Last Supper prior to Your death. Here You acted in a way which was to change history forever.
At the Last Supper You transformed the meaning of the cup and the bread into the New Covenant we are promised, whereby our Father will never abandon us.
As partakers of this covenant meal we become joined together as one family, people also joined to You as our Saviour. For now we possess You and You possess us, all thanks ever be.
Joined to You, we are joined to our Father for You are one. Joined to our Father and You, we become recipients of the Spirit who works with us to develop our holiness. What a profound blessing!
You feed us as the Bread of Life to nourish us in body, soul and spirit, enabling us to live no more in condemnation for our sinning, but gifting us a new beginning.
“And they overcame him (satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony...” (Revelation 12 v 11) For this we truly offer all praise and thanksgiving.
Your death, resurrection and later ascension, are all recalled by us as we celebrate the Holy Eucharist of the New Covenant, our rescue from satan having happened at the † of forgiveness.
Your kingdom upon earth has been set up and we are its citizens. This is a privilege and honour, but also a responsibility to live a holy life, as You showed us how to do this.
We embrace You on the † as our Saviour Brother, the Victor over satan, although the battle is not yet finished. We need therefore, to partake of You as the Bread of Heaven, our strengthening.
We must continue to fight the enemy. Thank You that through the Spirit, You are with us in the midst of every spiritual battle. We battle on in faith, so grateful to possess You as our Saviour, the Victor.
We know we are blessed in this life by Your all loving, wise presence with us. And we know we are blessed in death when we belong to You entirely. May our partaking of Your body and blood ensure our place in heaven.
We come to Your Sacred Heart of love to be sanctified through Your infinite merits, Lord Jesus. We hope to make reparation for our sins, seeking forgiveness at Your †and pleading for mercy.
Partaking of You in holy communion, we ask for ourselves and those dear to us, the grace to live according to Your way of life, Your will being perfect.
May the Holy Spirit so strengthen us by celebrating the Holy Eucharist, we will be able to accept for love of the Trinity, and so as to honour You, the Almighty Lord, the joys and sorrows of this passing life.
Also of course, we pray that one day we all will be united together, not only with our earthly God given family, but the whole company of heaven, rejoicing eternally.
In the meantime, may whatever we do be done for the glory of the Trinity. Thank You Lord God that we make this possible by sharing Your Spirit with us. Of Your kingdom there must be no end.
I ask that blessed by the Holy Eucharist, we delight and honour our Father by us having been strengthened to serve You in sincerity and total dependency, living within the truth of all You teach us, putting behind us our false gods and successfully combatting satan and his minions.
Jesus, Lord, the Bread of Heaven, please nourish us to “Renew a steadfast spirit,” (Psalm 51 v 10) which serves You without faltering or failing or wavering in any way at all, even in the face of satan’s fiercest attacks.
“Do not cast us away from Your presence” for we could surely die without being in a state of grace, “And do not take Your Holy Spirit from us.” (based on v 11)
As we come to the banqueting table, “Restore to us the joy of Your salvation,” that victory You won at the † for our forgiveness, “And uphold us by Your generous Spirit,” (based on v 12) He who is nothing but love to us.
We come to You, Lord Jesus, to receive from You, go forwards in faith no longer doubting, for we look to Your † of victory of life over death, love over enmity, our right living in You, through You, as we look to Your † shining in glory.
This story has to be You alive in us and us brought fully alive in faith as we feed on You, the Bread of Heaven, having been chosen for the purpose of helping to convert the world to our Father.
May this always be done consistently and insistently, our efforts blessed by the Holy Spirit, as we claim You as Saviour. May our efforts be done lovingly for, all thanks ever be, You uplift, replenish and strengthen our
faith at the altar.
This mystical union between us and Yourself as the Bread of Heaven, is the chosen path set out before us lovingly, entirely for the purpose of love as we live and work together with the Trinity’s backing and approval.
How we rejoice in this! We receive the blessings of our Father’s peace, our relationship re-established as we learn to die to self, to live for You, Lord Jesus, enthralled to receive of the Holy Spirit.
“All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You. For the kingdom is the LORD’s, and He rules over the nations.” (Psalm 22 v 27, 28)
How richly You have blessed us with Your love to save and sanctify us. The blessings of this grace are manifold indeed. “All the prosperous of the earth shall eat and worship,” (Psalm 22 v 29) and as we do, all praise be to the glory of the Trinity. Amen.
