“Before God can deliver us we must undeceive ourselves.”
St Augustine of Hippo
Are we sufficiently aware of the Lord God?
Often mankind has some grasp of His beauty.
For surely this is an everyday experience
One way or another, immediately about us?
But what about holy love and mercy?
Is mercy – an indispensable part of love anyway –
Is mercy sufficiently evident to us?
We have the healing miracles of Christ Jesus,
But many would say that is past history.
We have it seems to look wider at salvation’s history.
“O God, do not be far from me; Only God, make haste to help me.”
Psalm 71 v 12
What about sin, repentance, conversion?
What are these a result of?
Surely it can only be the mercy of forgiveness?
Surely God’s mercy is worked out at the † of Jesus?
Repentance says much about us.
Repentance reminds us of just how much,
How very much indeed, we are in need of God’s mercy.
We are sinners, the Trinity is holy.
If ever we are to meet and be complete
We need the mercy of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Grace enters our heart when mercy invades us.
“I will hope continually, and I will praise You yet more and more.”
Psalm 71 v 14
We look to Jesus, hung on the † for our sinfulness,
And cannot fail to see love’s mercy surely?
Cannot fail to hear the call to remorse,
To genuine sorrow, to repentance, a firm change of heart,
And to a total conversion dependent upon mercy.
Our Lord God invites us to come to Him,
To run to Him just as He did to the prodigal son,
To fall on our knees with our pleas
‘God have mercy on me, a sinner’.
We have come into contact with mercy in the Trinity.
“My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness and Your salvation all the day.”
Psalm 71 v 15
We have thankfully, opened ourselves up,
To the blessed and holy work of the Spirit
Who calls us to look at the †of Jesus and reflect.
The Spirit reminds us to inspect our conscience.
Every plea for mercy is heard before the throne of grace
Where too, the Lord Jesus pleads for us.
Grace, mercy, remorse, repentance, conversion, blend together.
They work hand in hand as love’s outreach.
May the Holy Spirit continue to teach us.
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion, blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
Psalm 51 v 1, 2 NIV
“God be in my head and in my understanding. God be in my eyes and in my looking. God be in my mouth and in my speaking. God be in my heart and in my thinking. God be at my end and at my departing.”
Sarum Primer
“O God, You know my foolishness and my sins are not hidden from You.”
(Psalm 69 v 5) I look to You for mercy. I need the Spirit to spell out reality for me and to help me make amends for all the errors of my ways.
Grant me the grace whenever is necessary to weep with remorse as I chasten my soul. “My prayer is to You, O LORD, in the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, hear me in the truth of Your salvation.” (v 13)
“Deliver me out of the mire” (v14) of my own sinfulness. Do not let me be pulled further down. “Let me not sink” (Cont.) for it happens all too easily and quickly without my ready notice.
“Let me be delivered from those who hate me,” (Cont.) satan and his minions “and out of the deep waters. Let not the flood water overflow me, or let the deep swallow me up.” (Cont.)
This is my urgent plea for Your mercy, dearest Father. “And let not the pit shut its mouth on me,” (v15) for You are gracious and kindly, allowing Jesus to die for me, to save me from final annihilation.
“Hear me, O LORD, for Your loving kindness is good,” (v16) charitable and trustworthy. “Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.” (Cont.) Please, please hear me.
“And do not hide Your face from Your servant for I am in trouble” (v17) of my own making day by disastrous day as I fail You. I am so, so sorry.
“Hear me speedily. Draw near to my soul, and redeem it; deliver me because of my enemies” (v18)
which I allow to take over and control me. Forgive me.
“You know my reproach, my shame and my dishonour; my adversaries are all before You,” (v19) me too, and this makes me feel wretched.
“Reproach has broken my heart,” quite correctly, but I do not want to remain in this sad and sorry state, “For I am full of heaviness.” (v20) Guilt is such a burden.
“I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none,” (Cont.) upon earth. But Your Spirit prompted me to look to the † of my Redeemer Jesus. What comfort I found there, thank You.
In His righteousness, in Your mercy, in the Spirit’s efforts towards sanctity, my name will not be blotted out “of the book of the living”(v28) I pray asking for mercy upon all others who seek Jesus.
Without remorse I remain “Poor and sorrowful,”(v29) but with repentance and conversion as a result of Your merciful forgiveness at the †, life changes in all its opportunities.
“Let Your salvation, O God, set me upon high”. (based on v 30) “I will praise Your name with a song,” (Cont.) which says how merciful You are to all who call upon You.
Indeed, I gladly, rejoicingly “Will magnify You with thanksgiving.” (based on v 30) May this delight and honour You holy Father, Son and Spirit, for it is right so to do.
“The humble shall see this and be glad, and you who seek God, your hearts shall live. For LORD, You hear the poor and do not despise Your prisoners,” (based on v 32,33) but look upon us with mercy.
Thank You that the Spirit reveals this fact to us. Thank You that the righteousness of the Lord Jesus, sacrificed for us, makes mercy a possibility and redemption a reality.
“Let heaven and earth praise You,” (based on v 34) and Your people raise up heart, mind, will and conscience before You. “Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You.” (Psalm 70 v 4)
Let remorse, repentance, conversion all play their part in healing us from all iniquity. “Let those who love Your salvation say continually ‘Let God be magnified,” (Cont.) and glorified in heartfelt thanksgiving for His mercy. Amen.
