“Let us know, let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning, He will come to us...” (Hosea 6 v 3)
We are called to know Christ Jesus.
This is our call to faith at Christmas.
We are called to follow Jesus, God’s Word.
Advent is a God given time of preparation,
Making properly ready to receive Jesus,
The promised Messiah, our Saviour.
He comes that we are enabled to live
That full human life our Father intended.
Jesus comes to fulfil the plan of salvation.
This requires our complete co-operation.
We need then, the Holy Spirit of love and inspiration.
The Spirit reveals the hope God offers us in Jesus.
The Spirit is our faith Builder, life’s Enhancer.
He reveals to us our Father’s promise in Jesus.
“ ‘I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand; I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people, as a light to the Gentiles, to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house.” (Isaiah 42 v 6, 7)
Jesus, the Messiah, is our Father’s covenanted promise to us.
He comes to show us our Father’s merciful love and forgiveness.
Jesus once returned to heaven and glorified, sends us His Spirit.
The Holy Spirit reveals the true value of the †to us.
He reminds us continuously of our call to perfection, to holiness.
Our Advent call is made by the Lord Jesus, by the Spirit,
To access the countless benefits of becoming God’s family by His loving plan.
The Spirit’s call is insistent, relevant and apparent if we listen to learn.
“ ‘You did not choose Me, but I chose you.
And appointed you that you should go and be a fruit
And that your fruit should remain,
That whatever you ask the Father in My name
He may give you’,” (John 15 v 16)
as this is love in action.
Call on the Spirit of Jesus this Advent to make good progress.
“For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly.” (Proverbs 2 v 6, 7)
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil.” (Proverbs 3 v 6, 7)
Holy Spirit Lord, Purifier and Sanctifier, please come to us in all Your life changing power. Come this Advent that we make a proper preparation for Christmas.
You remind us of the honour the Lord Jesus puts upon us in being called to take His message of our Father’s love and mercy to an increasingly secular world.
We cannot do this alone, for we will be met by derision, argument and confrontation, and we need to be wise to handle such conflict carefully, respectfully.
Come, tell us what to say with regards to the life story of Christ Jesus, beginning with the unlikely incarnation in a stable. Often a listener is sceptical immediately.
We need please, the wisdom to know who to approach, when and where, plus what we are to say that is appropriate to the listener’s life style, age and understanding.
Please straighten out the way before us, that we do not meet too many obstacles preventing us from evangelising fruitfully, as Jesus asks of us.
I imagine the main blockage to broadcasting the gospel message is our own behaviour. We are called to put Christian love into action, but do we accomplish this in a kindly, compassionate, meaningful manner?
The Lord Jesus is gentle with us. Please show us how to be sensitive and empathetic both to the said and the unsaid, so we do not stumble across hidden thoughts within someone and disturb them.
Let love in action be our Advent decision, adhering closely to the principles of the Master who shows us the way we are to live so as to delight and honour our Father. Please help us to be patient and tolerant.
We need Your input, Holy Spirit, Counsellor and Adviser, “Then I would not be ashamed, when I look into all Your commandments,” (Psalm 119 v 6) which are our Father’s commandments given us by the Lord Jesus, to love at all times.
Jesus has paid us the honour of calling us not servants, but brothers and sisters, to whom love and respect is due. Please help us to remember this when we are dealing with those seeking for life’s meaning.
“I will praise You with uprightness of heart when I learn Your righteous judgments. I will keep Your statutes; oh, do not forsake me utterly!” (v 7, 8)
We are preparing for Christmas, the season of peace and goodwill to all men, just as the angels sang when they announced the birth of our Saviour.
“How can a young (wo)man (or anybody at all) cleanse his (her) way? By taking heed according to Your word.” (v 9)
We all need to be inspired to read the sacred words of Scripture, the personal account of countless people who sought life’s true meaning, praying and studying.
We need to convince faith seekers of our experience of meeting with Jesus as the living Word of God, our hope of salvation and redemption. This is so important for the wellbeing of society.
We will not become righteous people nor an upright family, society, community, or nation, until we all turn to Jesus as the healing message of God’s love and mercy offered for our sinfulness.
Come, teach us more about this for we rarely hear sin spoken of today in this age of anything goes as long as it suits the individual. But as Christians, we have a certain set of principles, a high standard of life to reach.
Remind us to acknowledge the Lord God, our Father of mercy and His generosity of forgiving love, in sending us the Lord Jesus, spending time in earnest prayer daily, not just now and again when it suits us.
Holy Spirit, Lord, please prompt us to pray with regards to making ready for Christmas. We are making ready to receive the Son of God, and this is awesome.
Let us not be casual nor complacent as to the manner in which we will greet our Brother. For in Him we see and hear our Father. Oh to know the Trinity more fully.
Let the rejoicing of Christians be that of hearts and minds made ready for the Light of the world, the Bread of Life, the doorway to heaven being opened.
Holy love has been made special in a specific way that will give rise to many, many blessings and benefits for all and through all who seek to serve our Father through the love of Jesus.
Holy Spirit of love come, direct and inspect our heart, mind, will and conscience that nothing be lacking in our Advent preparation. This is the season of hope.
Please come to us to make us truly, realistically hopeful, specifically because we are delighted to be gifted a perfectly holy Brother, our Mentor as well as Saviour.
Any victory over evil is the result of Your impact and influence Holy Spirit of God, a measure taken by involving us closely with the life, death and resurrection of our Saviour Redeemer, our Brother.
Show us once again, how by living to love, honour and serve our Father, by adopting this attitude towards everybody, just as Jesus teaches us by example, how this results in fruitful, life begetting endeavours.
Let us give ourselves continually to prayer and charitable works of loving service, always spreading the gospel message of hope, peace and joy as we work.
May God be glorified by our efforts made in Jesus’ name. We are warned that the harvest is abundant but the labourers few. Therefore we need to ask for more helpers.
Holy Spirit, Lord, You influence us always to the better efforts made, the more loving and generous attitude shown, the goodwill in self-giving even sacrificially. Thank You for Your life enhancing influence.
May we in praying to and through Jesus as Lord and Master, working alongside Him without going off on our own track, may we seek, find and adhere to all that is good for us.
We cannot be holy without You and our Saviour Brother’s continuous influence, direction and safekeeping, or we fall into a trap laid by the enemy to divert us from leading a pleasingly, godly life.
At Christmas our Father’s loving, saving purpose is brought into the world in His Word made flesh. Trusting in Jesus as the Saviour, the Divine Healer, we must work for Him with all the energy and enthusiasm we have.
It is a daunting, yet exciting challenge, for our world to meet perfection, everybody to become holy. But this is our Advent Call and must be heeded. Come, Holy Spirit, equip and enthuse us to do what the Lord Jesus asks of us, so as to truly delight our Father. Amen.
