“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” (Psalm 23 v 4)
The pain level was extremely high.
The fear gnawed away inside me.
The fear grew enormously
Capturing my mind entirely.
It was very hard to pray,
But I did try to obey.
I needed guidance into the way of peace,
And release from knowing fear.
I needed God’s nearness.
I felt ashamed at my lack of faith.
I thought my love was stronger than this.
“I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23 v 4)
Oh what frailty overcame me.
Please help me to combat the enemy successfully.
The line of the Lord Jesus’ prayer:
“ ‘Deliver us from the evil one’,” (Matthew 6 v 17)
Has taken on freshly relevant, important meaning to me.
I think satan is staging an all out attack on me,
Even to the extent of trying to kill me.
So then I experienced fear in all its immensity,
Both of staring at my nemesis possibly,
And feeling a total failure in faith because:
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.” (1 John 4 v 18)
“(S)he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” (1 John 4 v 18)
Lord, I am so sorry for my failure to trust entirely in Your mercy, thus allowing fear to take a serious hold upon me. I ask forgiveness for my lack of trust, allowing me to spiral down into the strong grip of terrifying fear.
“But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, my glory” (Psalm 3 v 3) for the Lord Jesus is alive in me by the work of the Holy Spirit, all praise and thanks to You, merciful Father. You are “The One who lifts up my head.” (Cont.)
“I cried to You Lord with my voice, and You heard me,” (based on v 4) and said ‘Claim the promises of Isaiah 41 v 10.’ I will do this, seeking Your comfort, compassion and mercy and You will empathise with me.
I think of the fear the Lord Jesus had to face, and did face, in the Garden of Gethsemane, so as to fulfil Your will for His life, dearest Father. My fear is nothing by comparison.
I too, want to fulfil completely Your will for my life of devotion to Christian service. I thank You that the One who is in me, is infinitely stronger than satan who is in the world.
Therefore, just like the Lord Jesus did when He was in the wilderness, preparing for His ministry, He combatted the adversary by praying the words of sacred Scripture. Please help me to do similarly.
I ask this knowing, believing and trusting in fact that the Lord Jesus says, the “ ‘The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me because He has anointed Me to...proclaim liberty to the captives...to set at liberty those who are oppressed...’” (Luke 4 v 18)
So, Father God, You say “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am Your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand,” (Isaiah 41 v 10) which I know Father, is the ever loving Lord Jesus, at work within me by means of the Spirit.
Therefore I will try very hard indeed to overcome my fear, no longer discouraged because I can feel Your closeness and the warmth of Your all loving, ever loving, merciful outreach towards us. Please continue to uphold me daily by Your victorious right hand, my Lord, Saviour and Redeemer, the Lord Jesus, the Christ.
“Salvation belongs to the LORD. Your blessing is upon Your people.” (Psalm 3 v 8) “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3 v 6) “Let me examine my path, ponder it, and return to You Lord,” (based on Lamentations 3 v 40) it is terrible to be feeling outside of Your favour, in a desert of despair.
I do not want to go there again. Thank You for rescuing me so promptly, powerfully and mercifully, filling me with hope, guiding me into a fuller faith in You, deeper trust in You, showing me how to be kept firmly within the realm of Your love’s power.
Please continue daily to guide and guard me and all those who are disciples of the Lord Jesus, the Lord over life and death, the fullness of Your promise to deliver us from evil, that You can and will sanctify us.
“Let the Lord God show us the way we are to go and what we must do,” (based on Jeremiah 42 v 3) and let us co-operate prayerfully. “To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul,” (Psalm 25 v 1) again and yet again. Thank You for teaching me to do this.
“O my God, I trust in You; let me not be ashamed” spiralling down into the darkness of despair, fearing my end is coming. “Let not my enemies triumph over me,” if this is a spiritual attack as I suspect. “Indeed let no one who waits on You, be ashamed.” ( v 2)
“Let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause. Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your path” (v 4) so I never again wander off into the wilderness of lonely doubt and discouragement.
“Lead me in Your truth,” (v 5) which is the Lord Jesus come to me as my Saviour, anointing and appointing me for His work by the Holy Spirit. I declare that satan has no right to interfere with this, for I claim the name of Jesus.
Get behind me, satan! “Teach me,” for You, most holy Trinity, “Are the God of my salvation. On You I wait all the day. Remember O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your loving kindnesses for they are of old.” (v 6)
That is my experience. “Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions,” (v 7) especially those so recently when I failed to pray sufficiently, therefore allowing satan to gain a foothold.
You have already warned me that if I give him an inch he will take a mile, and he did! “According to Your mercy remember me, for Your goodness sake, O LORD.” (Cont.)
“Turn yourself to me, and have mercy on me, for I have been desolate and afflicted. (based on v 16) The troubles of my heart have enlarged; bring me out of my distresses,” (v 17) firmly out, never to return!
“Look on my affliction and my pain and forgive all my sin of doubt, of dismay, of distress and failure to trust and pray.” Consider my enemies for they are many, “satan and his minions and they hate me with cruel hatred”. (v 18) This is not the first time he has tried to kill me through serious illness.
“Keep my soul and deliver me; let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in You. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for You” (v 20, 21) and I know, thank You, I will not be disappointed when I call to You for mercy, to deliver me out of this significant difficulty.
For I claim the saving love of the Lord Jesus allowing me to say “As for me, I will walk in my integrity redeem me and be merciful to me,” (Psalm 26 v 11) as You have been, Lord God, merciful Father, thank You. “My foot stands in an even place; in the congregation I will bless You, Lord,” (based on v 12) Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
“O God, grant us your grace to so serve Thee in this life, that in death we may have the joy of claiming You as our Father, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour.” Amen.
