Matthew 11 v 29
And the promise when we do learn?
“ ‘You will find rest for your souls’.” (Matthew 11 v 29)
Rest with its double meaning:
Firstly, to remain, stop, be still awhile.
And possibly secondly, to be set free from fear, doubt, anxiety.
So this is the promise,
Made in the almighty power of God.
We are invited, asked, reminded,
To be still that God can, will
Fill us by His Spirit.
It is in the Spirit of Jesus
There is less room within us for negativity.
To be still is an opportunity,
An occasion always fully blessed,
To hand over to the sovereignty of God.
Contemplation and veneration go hand in hand.
And the benefit of allowing, asking
For God to command us is probably incalculable.
Useful, helpful, gainful is all time spent
Continuously in the presence of God.
The essence of prayer is stillness.
Yes as the promise says
“ ‘...you will find rest for your souls’.”
Matthew 11 v 29
Christian contemplation is veneration before God.
An awareness of the greatness of His love,
His love for us expressed in Jesus
As the living, abiding Word of the Father,
And a sensitivity, receptivity to the Spirit,
In whom we inherit the promise of life’s fullness.
Contemplation is to be still and bask in God’s presence,
Knowing this entirely as love and mercy.
So we have time just to be,
Not striving for anything, no struggling for surviving,
But simply enjoying God’s company in resting,
In the silence of reflection, in stopping to wonder,
To ponder on how close God is to us.
And finding the answer in the Lord Jesus.
“ ‘Abide in Me and I in you’.” (John 15 v 4)
There has to be a purpose in this advice,
From the One who is timeless, entirely without stress,
Who speaks the words of life to us.
Surely we need to retreat to meet with this God Man.
Who there as life began, designed us for friendship.
So what will we do with silence and solitude and stillness?
Our attitude towards God will be shaped in the silence of contemplation.
The mind and heart’s attitude and gratitude bearing fruit in its focus.
The real meaning of rest is just to be and trust in God!
“Therefore since a promise remains of entering this rest, let us fear lest any of us seem to have come short of it.”
based on Hebrews 4 v 1
“For we who have believed do enter that rest...”
Hebrews 4 v 3
That freedom from doubt, fear, and all manner of anxiety as we pray and make Jesus our Lord, the release of peace within us. But there is a corollary. “ ‘Today’, after such a long time, as it has been said: ‘Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts’.” (Hebrews 4 v 7) Lord Jesus, forgive us, all the times, occasions, opportunities when we think we can manage our life without You.
It feels as if the world has never, ever been busier than society now is. Forgive our relentless striving, our ceaseless activity, our pushing to do better in status, to gain more recognition, position and possessions. We need more of Your wisdom and guidance, but often do not
recognise our need. “To You I will cry, O LORD my Rock; do not be silent to me,” (Psalm 28 v 1) for I know the world needs You.
Lord Jesus, those of us already blessed to have met You, must carry a responsibility to make You known to others. Please help us with this. Send Your teaching Spirit as You promised. He will help us to understand. “ ‘If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper that He may abide with you forever.” (John 14 v 15, 16) Lord Jesus, as it was necessary for You to pray, so it must be of us. Lord, teach us to pray.
Come Holy Spirit of all wisdom, truth and guidance. Come, speak with us, teach us, direct us in all the ways of holiness. Help us please to see how to find the answers to any, or all of life’s challenges in the presence of Jesus. Help us, each of us, to devote to Him as Lord, the living Word of God. Without this there will be no progress in holiness for it becomes impossible. Befriend us to enable us to overcome our self will, our foolish and imposed independence.
Show us how to overcome our fear of failure and punishment – that which makes us turn our backs on God – because we hold on to a promise. Let us all see that “If anyone is in Christ, (s)he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new,” (2 Corinthians 5 v 17) and that will include how we approach life. We will see that we no longer have to be continually striving, jockeying for position, because in the Lord Jesus we are already fully blessed.
When the Lord Jesus asked us to learn from Him, there is much to be learned. Holy Spirit, Lord, keep us praying, finding answers in our faith, knowing that in the promised Saviour “The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives He lives to God,” (Romans 6 v 10) and our calling is exactly the same. We can rest upon the promise of sharing the Lord Jesus’ uprightness, made holy in the eyes of God. “For sin shall not have dominion over us, for we are ... under grace.” (based on v 14) It is essential for us to recognise this fact and respond to it.
Many of the stresses and strains of life we bring upon ourselves. I am sorry. Please draw us to faith, cause us to pray, help us to pray and shape our life through prayer that we get all things in balance. “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I will cry out to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I...” (Psalm 61 v 1) I am sorry that under pressure there are still times I forget to pray.
I want to do better than this. I want to draw closer to Jesus our Lord, the living Word of my life, the very presence of our Father. For this I do know, “You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy.” (Psalm 61 v 3) My life would have been lost without You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Thank You for the promise that although I am not worthy “I will abide in Your tabernacle forever.” (v4)
Thank You dearest Father, for granting me a Saviour whom I call love, respect, admire, trust and turn to. “I will trust in the shelter of Your wings,” (Psalm 61 v 4) those holy arms outstretched on the † out of love
for us. At the † I find meaning and healing, I find rest from fear and anxiety, I find rescue from satan’s attacks, I find hope. I offer praise and give thanks for the † of salvation, for the suffering of the Lord Jesus who took my place of punishment.
I know I need to be still before You Lord God, to enter the silence of prayer, to focus on Your goodness to us. And when I do, I feel my body, soul and spirit revived. Thank You. “Because Your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.” (Psalm 63 v 3, 4) I am overjoyed to be able to do this, “And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips,” (v5) Father, Son and Holy Spirit, my Restorer to fullness of life. Please ever teach me to pray that I call upon Your presence.
It is in calling upon You my recognition of all Your loving mercy, forgiveness, goodness, kindness, grows. “I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds.” (Psalm 77 v 11, 12) I am so grateful for each opportunity to meet with You in prayer, to take a rest from the hurly burly, to be set free from fear and worry, to be still and focus on You, O most Holy Trinity.
“Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary.” (Psalm 77 v 13) Lord, teach me to pray day by day by day. I ask this in longing to share in the holiness of Jesus that love which promotes and protects nothing but the very best for us. I know our life is meant to be lived in Jesus. I know this is where love’s fulfilment, hope, peace and the experience of joy lie. I know the Lord Jesus is the promise of our eternal fulfilment in heaven. Oh that we could, would all discover this, turn to Him, ask for His help and healing, the world would be a much better place to live in. Faith and prayer are the key.
Lord Jesus, teach us all to pray, that we make You our complete trust and dependence and so make progress in pursuit of holiness. Let our prayer make all the difference in the world as we place ourselves in a position to learn from You. Come Lord Jesus, come, teach us Your ways.
“You will show us the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand pleasures forevermore,” (Psalm 16 v 11) for You draw us closer to God. Thank You for all You do for us.
May we ever respond with prayer and praise. Help us to be still and worship. Please hear our prayer and answer us. Amen.
