“ ‘You shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins’.”
Matthew 1 v 21
Jesus, Lord, be ever God’s Word of Life to us;
Jesus, Saviour, be the offer of mercy from our Father;
Jesus, Healer, may forgiveness be Your highest gift;
Jesus, Shepherd, uphold us in Your care of us;
Jesus, Giver, gift us Your Spirit of holiness;
Jesus, Redeemer, enlighten us as to the power of Your †;
Jesus, Light, shine over us to shine through us;
Jesus, Restorer, replenish our world by Your holiness;
Jesus, Bread of Life, nourish our faith by the Holy Eucharist;
Jesus, Brother, may we rejoice in Your friendship;
Jesus, the Way, lead us home to our Father;
Jesus, the Truth, reveal to us all that is wise and worthy;
Jesus, the Life, be the life of God in us;
Jesus, Prince, establish us in peace;
Jesus, King, be the King of Glory over our holiness;
“O my Love, I cannot love Thee, but that I must desire above all things to be like my Beloved; O give me grace to tread in Thy steps and conform me to Thy divine image, that the more I grow like Thee, the more I may love Thee, and the more I may be loved by Thee. (The more I will love in return.) Amen.
(A prayer, apart from the invocation within brackets, of Thomas Ken 1637-1711)
Jesus, Wisdom, guide us by Your Spirit;
Jesus, Creator, re-create us by Your love;
Jesus, Rescuer, be ever the saving help of mankind;
Jesus, Son most loved, be the One we depend upon;
Jesus, Conqueror, demonstrate Your victory at the †;
Jesus, Grace, embrace us in Your kindly love;
Jesus, Mercy, be our recovery in honouring our Father;
Jesus, Protector, protect us by holy justice;
Jesus, Blessing, be forever love’s gifting;
Jesus, Purpose, the faithful Servant, share this with us;
Jesus, Fulfilment, perfection to honour our Father;
Jesus, Confidence, You encourage us to call God ‘our Father’;
Jesus, Life Giver, be ever our sincere repentance for all sinfulness;
Jesus, Enabler, restore us to Your promised fullness of life;
Jesus, Beloved, fill us to overflowing with Your Spirit of love;
Jesus, the Sacramental Mystery, come directly from heaven to live within and claim us.
“Listen to the statutes and judgments which I teach you to observe...” (Deuteronomy 4 v 1)
holy wisdom tells us, a way of life enacted for us by our Saviour Brother, the Lord Jesus.
“ ‘I will declare the decree, the LORD has said to Me, You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance and the ends of the earth for Your possession’.” Psalm 2 v 7, 8
It is to this end the Lord Jesus accepted the † for our salvation, for the Lord God’s saving plan of mercy. Jesus died that we might live forever through sharing the holiness of our Saviour.
Let us pray, that in all sincerity we can claim “The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness,” (Psalm 18 v 20) as gifted me by the Lord Jesus.
We are blessed, all believers, “According to the cleanness of our hands,” (based on v 20) as the Lord Jesus purifies us through the Holy Spirit ever at work with us.
“He has recompensed me,” (v 20) the Lord Jesus being our forgiveness as justified at the † of His holy life sacrificed for this purpose.
“For I have kept the ways of the Lord” (v 21) as best I can, recognising the call to become holy as all believers in Jesus are His good work in progress.
“And have not wickedly departed from my God” (v 21) or at least, have not intended to. Thank You that all faults and failings will be mercifully dealt with, when we prayerfully, with saddened heart and mind, repent, full of remorse and resolve to do better.
Thank You Father God that many a Psalm, and notably Psalm 15 KJV
version, help us to prepare for speaking about our faults and failings, whilst seeking forgiveness.
How could we firm up what the Lord Jesus means to us? “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8 v 10) provides the answer. To know, love, serve and honour You through the holiness of Jesus, shared with us by the Spirit of Life, this is such joy.
Ever let us pray for the divine help we need to lead a godly life, pleasing to You and rejoicing for us, but also let us not forget to pray at the start of each day. We must hand over the control of life to our Saviour Lord, asking to be humbly submissive to His leadership.
To do anything else is to let go of the leading string taking us forwards, always praying to experience the fullness of life the Lord Jesus promises us in all hope, peace and joy as the Holy Spirit impacts upon us to inspire us. How richly we are blessed to know Your Son, through Your Spirit, as then nothing can separate us from Your love. Thank You so very much. Amen.
