Are fungi ugly as some would say?
Maybe thought to be unworthy of the ground they take up.
But research the detail further
And you will find nothing made by our Creator Father,
Is without its place in the smooth running
Of our world, dependent upon ecology,
In all and every species of botany.
Some fungi are even pretty in their patterns
Of zig zags, spots, speckles and dots!
Others look fancy with a wavy edge.
So what is the Lord God’s pledge
At the feet of trees in dark woody areas,
Or even with fungi growing out of a deciduous tree trunk acting as host?
Some fungi even carry pleated plumage
In a variety of shapes and sizes,
Yet all with uneven, lobed margins
Of flesh gills radiating from the centre.
Then what about the colour of fungi?
This ranges from milky white to ochre,
Tan, yellow, brown and red
Or cleverly a tiny fungi of amethyst called the ‘Deceiver’,
Which survives on beyond autumn into winter,
Because with diminutive stature, it can shelter,
Hiding away from early frosts being well hidden
Amongst the forest’s fallen leaf litter. Where better!
Some fungi grow tall, looking rather like
A sheltering umbrella atop a stick.
Whereas others are thick in girth of stem or stalk.
Take a woodland October walk
And you may very well discover an array of fungi.
But no doubt if not attracted in any way,
-Some may even find these rather repulsive –
Well, this then begs the question,
‘Why, exactly are fungi grown?’
The answer tells us of our amazingly thoughtful,
Skilful, powerful Life Creator, the Lord God Almighty.
For surprisingly, fungi are neither belonging to plant nor animal grouping.
They form a set entirely on their own!
Fungi do not consume internally like animals,
Nor do they produce like plants, by photosynthesis.
Fungi grow and extend externally, sending down through layers of soil,
Root like hyphae, a nerve sensitivity.
Remarkable in their ability as decomposers,
Fungi very usefully recycle dead and decaying matter,
As well as being a parasite living upon another plant,
Drawing its necessary nutrients directly from the host.
Yes, the Lord God makes the most of all creation!
They cast spores into the air to grow the variety
Of different shapes and many sizes.
As the fungi cap expands, it pulls away from the stem,
Leaving torn tissue in a ring upon their formed body.
Never doubt that the Lord God thinks of everything!
These fungi are called toadstools and are strictly non edible. Mushrooms however, the field variety, not the startling yellow mushroom Strictly entirely off bounds for it is poisonous.
The others are the delicious edible, white, flesh species,
Fabulously tasty eaten with bacon, as long as you are not vegetarian.
And an added extra bonus, a further fungi focus,
The diverse population with the exception of the harmful few,
Help to keep a garden healthy in their decaying capacity.
When autumn leaves and pruning from flower stems, shrubs and trees,
Are used as a layer of mulch spread across the garden,
Fungi can be found fulfilling their task.
Perhaps we should not ask is this an unworthy species?
The answer is plainly ‘Definitely not’.
For is not this all a matter of trust,
Believing the Lord our Father knows exactly what He is doing,
And the ensuring results are always for our benefit.
Yes, to believe in God and to trust is a must in life!
Lord, how amazing is the creation of an individual species neither plant nor animal, but fungi, the decaying agent. Thank You for thinking of everything pertaining to life made to flow smoothly and be well sustained day by day, season by season.
I can look at the autumn fungi with better understanding and thereby an appreciation, when knowing their God given use. You make this possible! Amen.
