“We have become like those of old, over whom You never ruled, those who were never called by Your name.” (Isaiah 63 v 19)
We start the blessed season of Advent
By openly acknowledging this unhappy truth.
Father, You have promised much to us.
“ ‘Listen to Me, you who know righteousness’ ” (Isaiah 51 v 7)
-That most precious gift of the sacrifice of Jesus -
“ ‘You people in whose heart is My law’.” (Cont)
By the Holy Spirit, Jesus impressed upon us
The law which dictates love to be evident.
So what has gone badly wrong with us?
Why have we failed to live up to Your promise, dearest Father?
“ ‘My righteousness will be forever’,” (Isaiah 51 v 8)
You say we have a Saviour.
“ ‘And My salvation from generation to generation’.” (Cont)
Yet we fail to live by the right standing
Our Saviour Brother won for us at the †.
Why turn our backs on such an invaluable gift?
“ ‘You have gone away from My ordinances and have not kept them. Return to Me and I will return to you.’ says the LORD of hosts’.” (Malachi 3 v 7)
Why do we allow satan to shift our notice
That we abandon hope and live wantonly?
Fortunately we have been blessed by a special season.
This time of Advent is a time of preparation,
When we make truly ready for the coming of Christ.
He is our Saviour clearing away all the obstacles,
We are quietly piling up, ignoring Your instructions Father God.
We have prevented ourselves from our Saviour Brother
Coming into our life to gift us the fullness He promises.
This is the fullness of joy in sharing Jesus’ holiness.
We have marred, soiled, even ruined this opportunity.
At the start of Advent it is a time to say we are sorry.
Sorry for the sins we regularly commit,
Impoverishing and even ruining our friendship with Jesus.
This is a special season we begin in repentance.
What joyful recompense we will find in forgiveness.
“Praise the LORD! Oh, give thanks to the LORD for He is good! For His mercy endures forever ...Blessed are those who keep justice, and (s)he who does righteousness at all times.” (Psalm 106 v 1, 3)
“Remember me O LORD, with the favour You have toward Your people. Oh, visit me with Your salvation, that I may see the benefit of Your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, that I may glory with Your inheritance.” (Psalm 106 v 4, 5)
Dearest Father, I am reminded that at the very start of Jesus’ ministry, such a significant time in our history, the people were called to repentance, for the kingdom You planned through Your Son, by Your Spirit, was near them.
Now too, is an earmarked time in our history, this special season of Advent, a time of watching and waiting, hoping once more for salvation. Once again the first call must be to repentance.
We should echo our forebearers. “We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.” (Psalm 106 v 6) Our standards of morality have dropped to an all time low. I am sorry.
Again this holds true: “Many times He delivered them.” (Psalm 106 v 42) Never has there been a time of such comfortable prosperity for the majority of mankind. Yet we fail to share this readily with the impoverished nations. We are selfish, self-centred and often greedy. I am sorry.
“They rebelled in their counsel” (v 43) could be a description of us as we turn away from Your law of love, that which underlies all other commands given that we live harmoniously. I am sorry.
Are we not “Brought low for our iniquity.” (based on v 43) We are seeing an unprecedented number of unemployed, homeless, children the victims of drug abuse, modern day slavery, the break up of marriages and family life. I am sorry.
Call us back, call us back to live by the insights the Lord Jesus has taught us. He who warns us to keep watch for we do not know when the time of reckoning will come. Yet still we go our own wilful, woeful way. I am sorry.
We are given this special season to wake up to our wrongs, to become alert, to think again. If we long for heaven eventually we have to journey there travelling in the right direction, without being burdened down by excess luggage.
We carry the weight of our sin unless we say we are sorry for all faults and failings, asking the Lord Jesus to remove the burden from us, because the Holy Spirit has awoken us to the sorry state we are in.
Virtue is possible for us, but only if we live hand in hand with our Saviour Brother, alert and attentive to His and Your Holy Spirit, dearest Father and in this we have miserably failed. I am sorry.
May we strive harder to do better during this time, a special season, time to prepare for the joy of Christmas. May we make ready to receive our Lord and Master, offering His Spirit a clean home to live in.
I ask for the grace to use this time gainfully. We trust in the power of love, holy love ever at work with us, for this is the amazing gift You offer us, Lord God.
May we spend sufficient time in prayer of genuine repentance, making proper preparation for Christmas.
“Then we will not turn back from You. Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.” (Psalm 80 v 18)
Resolve, remorse, repentance and reconciliation have to be the forerunners to Christmas joy, the hallmark of this special season. “Restore us, O LORD God of hosts,” (v 19) please, please do this.
Grant us a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, as He always draws us closer to the Master, making us reliant upon the Lord Jesus. “Cause Your face to shine and we shall be saved!” (Cont.)
We look forward not only to the arrival of a royal Baby, but the second coming of Jesus in His full majesty and glory. How sad it will be if we have not made ready to receive such a significant One, Your Son!
May we lack none of the spiritual gifting the blessing of the Holy Spirit offers us. May He keep us firm in faith and constant in prayer now until Christmas. Let us strive to be ready to live fully by being ready to receive the Light of the world, our hope, our peace, our joy. Amen.
