“God is the Judge. He puts down one, and exalts another. For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup and the wine is red; it is fully mixed and He pours it out. Surely its dregs shall all the wicked of the earth drain and drink down.” (Psalm 75 v 7, 8)
How does this connect with the Holy Eucharist?
In this sacrament there is a cup with wine.
But this is not just any wine,
For it has been miraculously changed.
Although still the appearance and taste of wine,
The contents of the cup, when received in faith,
In belief in the saving power of the Lord Jesus.
Then this wine has become an invaluable part
Of the favour won for us at Jesus’ † at Calvary.
The wine is His blood which is life giving.
This is the blood shed for us at the †.
The blood of Jesus is real in its appeal for mercy.
“Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; who is so great a God as our own God? You are the God who does wonders.” (Psalm 77 v 14)
“You have declared Your strength among the peoples. You have with Your arm, redeemed Your people.” (Psalm 77 v 14, 15)
“I will praise You with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing praises to You,” (Psalm 138 v 1) for You rescue us from our sin ridden, broken state, Father God. You are most merciful towards us.
Thank You for allowing Your Son to accept the † on our behalf, taking upon Himself the punishment due to us for all our sinfulness.
“I will worship toward Your holy temple, and praise Your name for Your loving kindness and Your truth,” (Psalm 138 v 2) as made clear to us in the blessings of salvation.
We have become a new people, a family profoundly blessed by Jesus living, dying and rising again to remain with us forever as our Saviour. We are a people of hope.
Nothing other than our own wilful sinning will any longer separate us from You, merciful Father, our Deliverer. Your rescue plan for man is wondrous indeed.
“For You have magnified Your word above all Your name,” (Psalm 138 v 2) being faithful in love towards us, all seeing and all forgiving. How steadfast is Your kindness.
In Your sovereign authority, You could have abandoned us to our fate, given us over to satan’s evil influence. But You loved us so much, You would rather Your Son die for us, than this happen.
The Holy Eucharist is a daily reminder of this, for there is not a day passes without this unique sacrament being celebrated somewhere in the world.
I read once the statistics which had worked out, that there is not an hour of time which passes without this sacrificial offering being celebrated somewhere in the world. This is wondrous indeed.
Life felt empty of real meaning, a somewhat pointless exercise prior to meeting with my Saviour to be saved and sanctified, this ongoing process of belonging to Christ Jesus.
“In the day when I cried out,” desperate to find a faith, an eternal purpose to life, a healing for my lukewarmness, “You answered me,” (Psalm 138 v 3) mercifully.
You not only answered me, but You, through the friendship of the risen and glorified Lord Jesus, and His enabling me to call on the Holy Spirit, lovingly You “Made me bold with strength in my soul” (v 3 cont)
How kindly is Your mercy, dearest Father of loving forgiveness, richly blessing us by the sacrificial death of our Saviour. Jesus died that we might live a full life now and be forever together with You in heaven eventually.
You are the Lord of the living, not the dead. You are a Trinity of all loving kindness and a most wondrous mercy. “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me,” (Psalm 138 v 7) and restore me to favour.
“You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand will save me,” (v 7) because here sits the Lord Jesus, crowned the King of Glory, exalted as the world’s Redeemer and offered back to You as we worship.
I am sure dearest Father of forgiveness, such a merciful act of kindness, I know You “Will perfect that which concerns me” (v 8) the salvation of my family and friends, especially, but actually everybody.
“Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands,” (v 8) which is us, made to be Your adopted family, brothers and sisters of the Lord Jesus who is a new and eternal life to us.
Oh what mercy is at work in Your plan of salvation. May You ever be blessed by our thanks and praise for the heavenly inheritance the Lord Jesus won for us, at the heinous † of Calvary.
“For according to Your mercy, You have re-created us anew to a living hope through the Lord Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.” (based on 1 Peter 1 v 3) All of this is recalled in the Holy Eucharist.
“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise. Awake my glory!...I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing to You among the nations.” (Psalm 57 v 9)
“For Your mercy reaches unto the heavens, and Your truth not the clouds, Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be above all the earth,” (Psalm 57 v 11) as we rejoice in our new life in the Lord Jesus. We rejoice in Your resurrected presence, remaining with us always.
“For in You Lord God, is my defence. You are the God of mercy who shall come to meet me,” (Psalm 59 v 10) in the holy communion offered to us. “You will let me see my desire on My enemies.” (based on v 10)
“I will praise You forever because You have done it; and in the presence of Your saints I will wait on Your name, for it is good,” (Psalm 52 v 9) being synonymous with such a steadfast loving kindness which is so merciful.
We pray, celebrate the Holy Eucharist, and are reminded how You have restored us to the joy of Your salvation, upheld by Your Holy Spirit, the life renewing Spirit always at work through the Lord Jesus.
What an amazing sacrifice was offered for us in the blood shed by the Lord Jesus at the †. “Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness...Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.” (Psalm 51 v 7, 8, 9) because I claim my salvation in the Lord Jesus.
“Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you. For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.” (Psalm 116 v 8)
“I will walk before You, LORD, in the land of the living,” ( v 9) rejoicing to do so, and most grateful for
the new life in the Lord Jesus, where great is the peace gifted us, and the joy discovered in the fulfilment of Your promises as accomplished by the Lord Jesus.
Let us ever offer all praise for our salvation, offering all our worship through the love of the Lord Jesus, the King of Glory and Prince of Peace, He who prays for us.
“ ‘Holy Father, help through Your name those whom You have given to Me, that they may become as We are One.” (John 17 v 11) “How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” (Psalm 133 v 1)
“I shall not die, but live and declare the works of the LORD. You LORD has chastened me severely” - and I know this was necessary and that You only chasten for our own good because You love us - “but You have not given me over to death.” (based on Psalm 118 v 18)
“Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them and I will praise You, LORD.” (based on Psalm 118 v 19) “I will praise You for You have answered me and have become my salvation,” (v 21) my hope of heaven.
Thank you so much for my conversion of heart and mind through a friendship with my Lord and Saviour, by which Your glory does shine as often as we call on our Saviour Brother to make us resolute in faith and prayer. Amen.
