“All my hope on God is founded;
He doth still my trust renew.
Me through change and chance He guideth, Only good and only true.
God unknown, He alone
Calls my heart to be His own.”
Opening verse of a hymn of Robert S. Bridges 1844-1930 based on a hymn by J. Neander 1650-1680
I looked out of the window,
And what do I see?
The beauty of April beguiling me.
Lord, I could be so easily,
Readily passionate about tulips.
Tulips speak to me of Your glory.
Tall and stately, heads held high,
They remind me of Your ride in victory
Into the city on Palm Sunday.
You drew near and how the crowds did cheer. You too, were upright, Your life for the world to see If only they had eyes to look.
Wearing the garment of high renown,
Your lovely head should soon own the kingly crown, But not of mocking cruelty,
Barbarous thorns of our iniquity.
Regality is witnessed in beauty, like the holy.
“Human pride and earthly glory,
Sword and crown betray God’s trust;
What with lavish care men buildeth,
Tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God’s power, hour by hour,
Is my temple and my tower.”
Second verse of hymn
Do the tulips recognise their duty
To stand tall, give honour and praise
To amaze at a God of such creativity? Only He could bring about that which is holy Out of a week leading to utter calamity. Gradually the tulips open up,
Display their cup as if to pay homage. Will we pray in a similar way of deference Reference to all You, Lord Jesus
Do for us upon the †of victory?
Scarlet red in the tulip bed,
Dark blood to be shed for mankind’s destiny. Crimson blood poured out, most cruelly, for we,
All of us, have lost our way.
Yet triumph awaits on Easter Day, praise be!
Let the garden now make ready to rejoice and give display. Tulips, look up, display your splendour.
The cup of suffering will be our Lord’s holy offering.
“God’s great goodness aye endureth, Deep His wisdom, passing thought. Splendour, light and life attend Him, Beauty springeth out of nought. Evermore, from His store
New-born worlds rise and adore.”
Third verse of hymn
Would you too, speak of His glory?
Mankind’s story is the call to beauty.
Yes, tulips tall and stately, remind me.
We are called to be holy,
Life made worthy of recognition eternally.
Easter awaits us, soon we will celebrate.
To reflect is our duty, let the tulips speak silently yet loudly. Tulips talk of glory, springtime’s life giving energy. Tulip cup, look up, open up and shout ‘Glory’, Painted purple for passion, crimson for our Lord’s dying. His overcoming all that besets us, all manner of waywardness. That life can be blessed, best addressed by holiness.
“Daily doth the Almighty give, Bounteous gifts on us bestow; His desire our soul delighteth Pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at His hand, Joy doth wait at His command.”
Fourth verse of hymn
Tulips striped, maybe by the running tears of affliction. Let us now look in the right direction.
Golden in glory, rich, richest yellow warm as sunshine, Fine is your testimony, O tulips so lovely.
Tulips speak to me, saying:
‘Life is to be lived fully with joy.’
Give now all thanks and praise in your worship. Easter is near to you, God is so very good to you. Rejoice, look up like our tulip cup of offering.
We open readily in the warmth of God’s love, will you too? Be still and let God fill your life.
1807-1892
We have our identity, our Creator’s love is your destiny.
Will you be still sufficiently to see this?
Do not rush by and miss the opportunity, the call to joy.
Feel the beauty of God’s peace, stopping and seeing, reflecting, being.’
“Still from earth to God eternal Sacrifice of praise be done, High above all praises praising For the gift of Christ His Son. Christ doth call one and all;
Ye who follow shall not fall.”
Final verse of hymn
“When we sing to God in heaven We shall find such harmony, Born of all we’ve known together Of Christ’s love and agony.”
Fifth verse of a hymn of Richard Gillard
Lord, I stopped and glanced out and so much happened! Thank You for the beauty of an April garden, the tulips offering eloquent testimony to the beauty of life. Truly they are a call to joy as I can feel Your closeness in their stately growth. Tulips are oh so lovely!
“Drop Thy still dews of quietness, til all our strivings cease, take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess, the beauty of Thy peace, the beauty of Thy peace.”
Fourth verse a
hymn of J.G.Whittier
Lord, You call us to experience joy in our worship. Remind us
to be still sufficiently for You to be enabled to draw us by the beauty that surrounds us speaking of Your closeness. For surely we can only truly worship in Your company. Thank You for the beauty of April beguiling me. How I would give thanks and praise and honour all You marvellously do for us. Amen.
